iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s are very open devices. Jailbreaking helps eliminate that from the “don’t” list. There are dozens upon dozens of really interesting and cool jailbroken mods, hacks, and apps in Cydia. We are going to cover just 5 (actually, 6) of what we think are the must-have’s

The first one is called SBSettings, which is available for free in Cydia. It allows you to turn things on and off, such as 3G, bluetooth, and more. There’s also toggles for volume, brightness, and other things. SBSettings can also turn on or off various MobileSubstrate extensions, battery percentage, numeric GSM, and a whole lot more. This should be the first thing that every jailbreaker installs first.

The next app is called Cycorder. This is available for free in Cydia. If you’re on a iPhone 3GS or a iPod Touch, then skip this one. This is for the 2G and 3G iPhone’s only. It let’s you record high-quality video using your phone’s camera. The frame rate of the video will be that of the camera. Audio quality is excellent. The file sizes can be large, but the video retains a lot of its quality. If you’re looking for a free alternative to those dinky “video recorders” that are starting to pop up in the App Store, then this is definitely for you. It’s actually better than all those.

LockInfo is just amazing. There’s a 14-day (2-week) trial in Cydia. After that, this is $4.99, but it’s well worth it. This isn’t really useful to people on iPod Touch’s, but if you’re on an iPhone, then this is just awesome. LockInfo let’s you look at a bunch of different information on your lockscreen, such as unread mail, missed calls, Twitter, RSS feeds, and more. It can also let you view/delete emails, as well as viewing RSS post excerpts, all on your lockscreen! There’s also an option that let’s you stick LockInfo onto your homescreen.

Next up is Backgrounder and Kirikae, both of which are available for free in Cydia. Backgrounder allows you to simply background apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch, thus allowing for simple multitasking. Kirikae is an extension for Backgrounder (made by the same developer) that allows you to switch between your backgrounded apps for an even greater multitasking experience. There’s several ways in which you can bring up the list of backgrounded apps. Wepersonally like holding the home button for a longer period of time to bring up the list. Tapping on an app will background whatever you’re in, and switch to whatever you tapped on. You can also close an app by tapping on the “x” to the right of the app. Background plus Kirikae is THE ultimate multitasking solution for ANY mobile device. We personally like this solution more than ProSwitcher, as Kirikae just seems more practical, as you can see more backgrounded apps at once and what not. You can also add apps to a “Favorites” menu and a bunch of other things.

Finally, we have qTweeter. There’s a trial for this in Cydia, and then it’s $4.99 after that. It may sound a bit much for something like this, but this is pretty neat to have for anyone who uses Twitter and/or Facebook. qTweeter allows you to post to Twitter and/or Facebook from any app with the status bar (if you’re playing a game that doesn’t have the status bar, you can use Backgrounder and Kirikae to bring up Kirikae’s backgrounded app list, and then slide down on the status bar to bring up qTweeter). You basically just slide down on the status bar to bring qTweeter down. You can also post pictures for TwitPic, and even videos (included those of you who are on the 2G or 3G iPhone using Cycorder). It can even post whatever you’re listening to from the iPod, whatever you’re browsing in Safari, and several other things.

For this to work, you must reboot after installation. You also have to do the “Free Memory” command in SBSettings for it to fully work. Your device may become unresponsive for about 45 seconds during this time. This should be expected, so dont’ panic.

But why do big boys love technology? Here, let’s find out.

1. The “wow” factor. Who can resist a gadget that has a cool new design like a remote controlled aircraft model for example? Not even big boys can. So, because of the tech toys’ attractive designs, guys can’t do away with gadgets even if it means just displaying them inside their room.

2. Tech toys bring back the kid in them. Little boys love video games, remote controls, and other gadgets. And so, any guy, when given a new tech toy, will definitely feel like a kid again. Playing tech toys has always been fun, engrossing, and fascinating, so there’s no doubt big boys love having them.

3. Tech toys have entertainment value. After work or office hours, guys get stress-relief from playing tech toys. And so, with these toys’ entertainment value, who else would even think about hanging out and grabbing some beer?

4. The impression they create. Guys, by nature, are conscious about how people look and think about them. And if they do have the money, they show it in so many ways. And owning tech toys is just one. Also, these gadgets make them look and feel trendier.

5. The convenience. Most tech toys are not just designed as toys alone. But they are integrated with several functions that big boys find very useful. So, who would want to miss these toys that combine several gadgets in one?

There are really a lot of reasons to love about tech toys. That’s why, you can’t blame why even big boys do.

OMG Pirates! is an iPhone app by the creators of Zombieville USA, Mika Mobile. Those of you who play Castle Crashers on the Xbox will feel right at home with OMG Pirates! OMG Pirates is an action “beat-’em-up” game, which places you as a ninja fighting off hordes of pirates who are invading your village.

The gameplay works like a charm – the ninja star on the left is used to move your character around the screen. Unlike Zombieville USA, where you could only move left and right, in this game you can move in any direction. As explained in the tutorial in the game, the green button does different things depending on when you press it. If you press it when you’re running, you can do an awesome ninja jump, and if you press it while you’re standing still, you can dodge/counter.

Even on easy mode this game gets challenging fairly quickly. The kinds of pirates have great variety and overuse of the bombing pirate gets really annoying.

I’ll give this app a score of 9/10, I say buy it.

And if you’re good, you can cheat your way through the levels, as shown below.

So go ahead and open up iTunes. To make sure that your song will be converted into the right format, go to the preferences for iTunes. In the ‘General’ tab, click on ‘Import Settings’. Under ‘Import Using’, make sure ‘AAC Encoder’ is selected. Click ‘OK’ when finished.

Find the song that you want to make a ringtone out of. Right-click on it and go to ‘Get Info’. Go to the ‘Options’ tab. Notice the ‘Start Time’ and ‘Stop Time’ boxes. Edit these numbers to be 30-seconds or less. When done choosing your segment, click on ‘OK’.

Now, right-click on your song once again, and click on ‘Create AAC Version’. iTunes will now make a new version of your song using the 30-second segment you have just chosen.

When it’s done converting, go to your library and find this new 30-second piece of audio. Right-click on it and go to “Show in Finder” (Mac OS X), or “Show in Explorer” (Windows). Change the extensions from .m4a to .m4r.

In Mac OS X, right-click on the file, and go to ‘Get Info’. Click on the arrow next to “Name & Extension”. Change the .m4a to .m4r. Delete this file from your iTunes library (without deleting the actual file if it asks), and drag the .m4r into it.

In Windows, you’ll need to ‘Show extensions for known files’ under the second tab in the ‘Tools’>’Folder Options’ section of any Explorer window (just open up the Recycle Bin and enable extensions). Next, right-click on your file and go to ‘Rename’. Change the.m4a to .m4r. Delete this file from your iTunes library (without deleting the actual file if it asks), and drag the .m4r into it.

You should now see your ringtone under the ‘Ringtones’ section on the left side of iTunes. Sync if up with your device and test it out in Settings>Sounds.

Maybe that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The DX’s large display was specifically intended to satisfy the needs of readers of newspapers, magazines and academic textbooks after all. In addition to agreeing partnerships with various colleges and universities, Amazon also benefited from a lot of publicity as a result of a number of political bodies who publicly supported the use of digital textbooks and e-book readers.

Always under financial pressure – educational bodies very quickly realised that digital textbooks not only had the potential to yield financial savings, but that it would be easier to keep textbooks updated. Currently there is, on average, a seven year timespan between revisions of textbooks. Digital media are much easier to revise and update, so a huge improvement would be possible.

The relatively high cost of the readers would be one potential obstacle to their widespread adoption. However, based upon the price of the Kindle 2, which has fallen by $ 100 to $ 259 in the eight months since it launched, it seems reasonable to assume that prices will fall to the point where e-book readers become a viable proposition.

The general consensus among business analysts seems to be that a price in the region of $ 150 is what is required in order to see e-book readers move into the mainstream consumer marketplace. There is currently a very high level of competition in this sector – Microsoft, Asus, Sony, Apple and Barnes and Noble are just some of the companies competing with Amazon and who have readers of their own under development. With so many manufacturers chasing market share, it doesn’t seem impossible that the $ 150 mark could be achieved – maybe even in 2010. Shave another few dollars off for a bulk discount and e-book readers in classrooms and lecture theatres start to look more and more likely.

There are however, some further obstacles to overcome. Blind students for example, have complained that the Kindle puts them at a disadvantage. Although a text-to-speech option, which you might imagine would be helpful, is included in the Kindle, it requires a lot of navigation through text menus to arrive at it. At the moment, Amazon are developing audio menus which may go some way to addressing such concerns.

The durability of the devices may also be suspect for use by students. There were some complaints regarding cracking screens in Kindles – which may have been related to non-proprietary covers rather than the device itself. It does seem likely that e-book readers used by students could pick up a few bumps and scrapes during the course of the academic year. Perhaps a ruggedized reader may be required.

Thus far, it seems as if the Kindle got off to a good start in education and then hit a few snags. None of these seem to be major though – especially not if you consider the level of determination and innovation Amazon have shown thus far. The adoption of electronic books in the classroom does look more and more likely all the time. It appears as if the Kindle may be at the beginning of a long and successful academic career.

Another Version

I’ve been pleased to find a number of my favorite Firefox extensions available in the new gallery. The following are six of them that can help you get much more out of Chrome, including extensions for making life with Google’s own applications easier. (Note that you must have the latest beta version of Chrome to work with these, and it’s available here.)

iMacros. This extension for Chrome looks and works exactly like the hugely popular iMacros extension for Firefox. It lets you easily record repetitive actions, such as loading groups of tabbed sites that you use all day, and then play them back with the click of just one button. OStatic has a complete visual tour of how to use the Firefox version here.

Xmarks. If you’re a longtime Firefox user, you probably already use the Xmarks bookmarking and synchronization extension. Now it’s available for Chrome. As jkOnTheRun has noted, Xmarks can revolutionize the way you work.

Google Apps Shortcuts. This is a simple extension that lets you get at Google Apps with one mouse click. You can jump right to documents, spreadsheets, presentations or Gmail, for example, as seen at left.

ChromeMilk. RememberTheMilk has been a popular online to-do list manager for years, and is now available as an extension for Chrome, dubbed ChromeMilk. It lets you access your to-do tasks right from Chrome’s toolbar.

One Number. This extension lets you keep an eye on incoming traffic to Gmail, Google Reader, Google Voice and Google Wave. It’s an all-in-one dashboard, as seen here.

AdBlock. Ask some Firefox users what their favorite extension is, and they’ll say AdBlock Plus. It removes all kinds of ad-oriented annoyances from your browsing experience, and this version for Chrome carries over all the features from the Firefox extension.

In the space of only a few months, the Kindle has become Amazon’s best selling product. It currently enjoys an astonishing 60% share of the U.S. e-book reader market. In October 2009, Amazon released the Kindle for international customers in over 100 countries outside America. It seems reasonable to suppose that the Kindle will have a similar level of success in the worldwide market.

Although the Kindle is now a byword for e-book reader it is not the only device available, not by a long way. The competition is impressive and Apple, Sony, Barnes and Noble and Microsoft (the list goes on) all have e-book readers planned for release in the very near future. The level of competition in this new and developing market is going to be very high. It’s a bit of a backhanded compliment to Amazon that any new reader which shows promise is instantly given the title of the “Kindle Killer”.

The current ticket price for the Kindle 2 is $ 259. That’s $ 100 less than the $ 359 February launch price – but it’s still a fairly hefty sum. A lot of industry watchers are suggesting that a sales price around about the $ 150 mark is what’s needed to move e-book readers out of the high tech gadget market and into the mainstream retail arena. The enhanced levels of competition that seem likely for next year will certainly lead to reduced prices – which could mean that the $ 150 sales price will be achieved during 2010.

Meanwhile, if you have a notion to treat yourself to a Kindle but are a little put off by the price, then consider the broader picture cost-wise. E-books don’t use paper, ink or bindings – and they don’t have the costs associated with shipping a physical product that a traditional paper book has. They are therefore, quite a bit cheaper than paper books. If you read a fair bit – say a book a week – then the money you save on books could pretty soon pay for the cost of your nice new reader.

Even better than cheap e-books, you can download a large selection of totally free e-books direct from Amazon’s Kindle store. Many of the free books are classics which are now out of copyright – Gulliver’s Travels, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Sherlock Holmes are just a few examples. You will also find more recent releases, possibly on special offer from publishers. In addition to completely free e-books, there are many books included among Amazon’s 360,000 Kindle titles which are available for a purely nominal fee – $ 0.01 is really quite common. You could very easily get the cost of your Kindle reader back just by using free, or low price, books for your Kindle.
